Courtney Brandon, LPC/MHSP, RPT

Courtney is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Registered Play Therapist in the state of Tennessee. She is also a Collaborative Divorce Child Specialist and Rule 31 Mediator. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Tennessee, and her Master of Education degree from Lincoln Memorial University and has worked with children, adolescents and families in conflict or with behavioral and emotional issues since 2006 in a variety of clinical and advocate roles.

Prior to private practice, she was a child and family therapist at a community agency and worked primarily with children and families with a history of trauma, abuse and separation. She also served as the regional director of the agency and was responsible for both clinical oversight and day-to-day business operations for the agency in nine counties.

Courtney has a passion for working with children, adolescents, young adults and parents. She specializes in helping children manage and regulate their emotions and acts as a support for parents through offering insight and resources. Other areas of specialty include helping children and teens work through grief and loss, separation, trauma, anxiety, and depression. She understands the importance of supporting the entire family system when embarking on the path to well-being. Each client and family are unique, and one of the most important parts of your work together will be building a trusting therapeutic relationship in which she works to understand her clients and their specific concerns. She also enjoys working with young adults, helping them to navigate the challenges related to transition from adolescent to adulthood. Courtney is warm and compassionate and she takes a collaborative, strengths-based approach to counseling, incorporating her experience with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to teach clients new skills and offer insights into current patterns of thoughts and behaviors. Courtney is also trained in using EMDR for relief of symptoms related to trauma, loss, anxiety, depression, OCD, and attachment/relational issues. In her work with children and adolescents, she uses a prescriptive child centered approach, working to understand children’s unique concerns and challenges while teaching coping and regulation skills playfully. She also utilizes Sand Tray Therapy and artistic expression as a way to facilitate greater self-awareness and growth.

Courtney serves on the board for the Tennessee Association for Play Therapy. She has also had the honor of guest lecturing at the University of Tennessee and Lincoln Memorial University on the topics of Grief in Children of Divorce and Play Therapy.

When not in session, you can find Courtney hanging out with family and friends. Courtney practices what she preaches by regularly engaging in mindfulness and meditation practices as well as expressive arts and connection to nature. Courtney enjoys painting, hiking, traveling, playing the piano and guitar, watching live music, reading and connecting with others in the community. She believes the work she does is a calling and feels privileged to walk beside her clients on their healing journeys.
