Dr. Laura S. Wheat, Ph.D., N.C.C.

Hello! I’m Laura (she/her). I am a professional counselor who has been in the field since 2007. I have an M.Ed. in Counseling & Development from Winthrop University and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from The University of Virginia. I am fully licensed in the state of Georgia (LPC #007135) and am currently receiving supervision while completing requirements for licensure as an MHSP in Tennessee. I am also a National Certified Counselor (NCC #225753). Additionally, I am a member of the LGBTQ+ community and I look forward to serving queer and trans folx of any age, as well as those in a process of self-discovery, in an affirming relationship.

I specialize in grief resulting from both death-related and non-death losses (such as divorce/relationship breakup, infertility, job loss, family changes, and other life transitions). Grief is both an intensely personal and a relational experience, and it can surprise us, especially if it’s not the first time we’ve dealt with loss and we think we know what to expect. It also shows up differently at different stages of life. So, my approach when working with clients who are grieving is to tailor to your specific individual needs, understanding that those needs may change as we work together.

In general, I believe humans make meaning of themselves and their lives both internally and in relationship with others. We do this through the stories we tell about ourselves and the people in our lives, the roles they play with us. Some stories are more empowering than others. I believe in nurturing the therapeutic relationship with each client to explore their stories in a safe space. Through this process, it is my privilege to co-create, and bear witness to, new stories of hope and healing. Above all, I seek to match my therapeutic approach to each client’s needs and goals for counseling.
